Tomorrow is Nyepi, or ‘the Silent Day’ here on Bali. Everyone (tourists included) will be barred from leaving their homes/hotels (anyone caught on the streets will be faced with having to do push ups and pick up trash!), many people will fast, and some will stay silent to beg forgiveness in the new year. Today, in the lead-up to Nyepi, there’ll be processions with Ogoh Ogoh (pictured here) in the streets.

This, like many of the Ogoh Ogoh, was made by the youth of a village here in Bali. It took 20 people 2 months to make. Apparently having the youth build bigger and more elaborate effigies is a fairly recent development, and the government now runs a contest for the best one built with eco-friendly materials.
