Traditionally, the rice fields in Bali are owned and run by individual families, but the farming is planned by the community as a whole, who meet once a month to do so. This allows the whole community to work together to coordinate water usage (it is common for the farmers to share water with each other) and manage pests (traditionally done by rotating crops). Fairly recently, the government forced local farmers to start using modern farming practices in order to increase yields. After noticing how the soil tends to suffer from these practices, some villages are now returning to more traditional approaches.
